Just two days before being sworn into office, our Governor Elect Wes Moore “Expresses Support for Medical Aid in Dying” as reported by David Higgins II, editor of The Southern Maryland Chronicle. He goes on to tell us that … Advocates of medical aid in dying are cheering recent statements by Gov.-Elect Wes Moore in support of patients having the option.
The governor-elect was asked last week at a summit about his support for “bodily autonomy” in the context of end-of-life decisions. Moore spoke about his own experience with family members near death and said, as a state, Maryland should protect the ability for people to make “independent decisions about the suffering that they are enduring.” The issue, the “End of Life Option Act,” was taken up by the Maryland Legislature in 2019, at which time it failed to pass in the state Senate by one vote. Opponents of medical aid in dying cite religious reasons or see it as doctor-assisted suicide. Legislation has not yet been introduced this session; however, supporters hope to try again in the 2023 term.
I am reminded of a Sci-Fi movie, Soylent Green, which debuted in 1973, and that speaks to the issue of government assisted suicide … the movie is set in the year 2022.
By 2022, the cumulative effects of overpopulation, pollution and global warming have caused severe worldwide shortages of food, water and housing. New York City has a population of 40 million, and only the elite can afford spacious apartments, clean water, and natural food. The homes of the elite are fortified, with security systems and bodyguards for their tenants. The poor live in squalor, haul water from communal spigots, and eat highly processed wafers: Soylent Red, Soylent Yellow, and the latest product, far more flavorful and nutritious, Soylent Green.
DOES ANY OF THAT SOUND FAMILIAR IN 2023?! But … the real shocker comes when the audience finds out that Soylent Green is manufactured by processing dead people!
If all of this is starting to feel a little close to home, you should know that … the composting of human bodies has become a thing!
The BBC News reported on January 1, 2023 that … In 2019, Washington was the first US state to legalize it. Colorado, Oregon, Vermont and California followed suit. New York is therefore the sixth American jurisdiction to allow human composting, following Saturday's stamp of approval from Kathy Hochul, the state's Democratic governor.
Well, it appears that we are inching closer to the notion that recycling dead people is good for the environment --- and --- could be a source of protein in our diets!
The question to contemplate is: how long will it be before state-approved doctor-assisted suicide becomes state-MANDATED doctor-assisted suicide? Medicare is expensive and seniors receive a disproportionate amount of it as they approach end of life and Medicaid is a state budget buster. So, the obvious solution for those in charge is to relieve the burden from the taxpayers and DIRECT you to end your life when you are no longer a productive member of society.
If you don’t think it can happen … well … it already is happening! And we can expect that it will accelerate in the coming years.
So, here we are. It is 2023 and … we are living in Orwell’s 1984 … the way things are managed by the government is reminiscent of Orwell’s Animal Farm … and … we are on the threshold of a dystopian Sci-Fi movie that, in 1976, portrayed life in 2022 as a place where self-elimination from society was expected and you were then turned into food … swell!
So, as we continue to watch the country’s long, slow slide into darkness, we need to ponder this: Is it art imitating life or is it life imitating art? Whatever it is, we can only hope that the Republican majority in the House of Representative can put the brakes on it.
